Overview

Server rack units typically take up the most amount of floorspace within the data centre, these often have indicator LEDs on the front of the unit displaying drive status and connectivity information. As data centres are becoming more critical to the connected world it is increasingly important to ensure their uptime. Engineering teams are keenly interested in device usage and preventive maintenance on server units to ensure maximum uptime is achieved, thus designers are moving towards including graphical displays in server rack units which display more in-depth utilisation information and connection details.

Integrating an Embedded Video Engine (EVE) IC and a small display brings many benefits including:

  • Use colour graphics to add a modern feel to the interface
  • Provide more comprehensive drive lifecycle data via widgets such as text and numbers
  • Create a more dynamic interface using EVE’s touch capabilities
  • Upgrade existing designs without re-writing the parts of the MCU firmware
  • Show warnings if data write cycles are exceeding predetermined limits
  • Additional pages such as a settings menu can be added allowing more functionality

Key Features:

The following key features of EVE make it ideal for a data centre server application:

  • Range of screen sizes supported including 3.5” to over 10” and circular displays
  • Supports bar-type displays for 1U/2U low-profile rack-mount units
  • Custom fonts allow multi-language support and symbols
  • Create custom widgets such as graphs and arc gauges with EVE’s extensive graphics support
  • Low resource usage on the host MCU (ideal for adding a display to existing and new designs)
