⚡ Line by Line Rendering: The Secret Behind EVE’s Efficiency

26 Sep 2026 –

Introduction

In embedded graphics, efficiency is everything. Traditional display controllers often rely on brute force — storing entire screen images in external SDRAM / DDR memory — which drives up cost, complexity, and power consumption. Bridgetek’s Embedded Video Engine (EVE) family takes a smarter path: Line Buffer rendering. This innovation, on the EVE1 – EVE4 families, eliminates the need for bulky frame buffers and unlocks a new level of design simplicity.

🧩 The Conventional Approach: Frame Buffers Everywhere

Graphics MCUs typically require two full frame buffers:

  • One buffer feeds the display.
  • The other buffer is updated with the next frame.

For an 800×480 display at 24‑bit colour depth, each frame consumes nearly 1 MB of memory. Two buffers double that requirement, before adding fonts, icons, and images.

This architecture forces designers to add external SDRAM or DDR memory leading to:

  • Higher Bill Of Materials (BOM)
  • Larger PCB footprints with complex routing.
  • Higher power draw from constant memory access.

With SDRAM and DDR prices rising, this model is increasingly unsustainable for cost‑sensitive applications.

⚙️ The EVE Difference: Line Buffer Rendering

EVE devices break away from the frame buffer model. Instead of storing entire frames, they use a line buffer — rendering each line of pixels in real time.

The key advantages include:

  • No external SDRAM / DDR required — the frame buffer is eliminated.
  • Simpler design — fewer components, smaller boards, easier layouts.
  • Lower cost — reduced BOM and manufacturing expenses.

This architecture is not only efficient but also elegant, enabling developers to focus on user experience rather than hardware constraints.

The innovative line buffer approach combined with EVE’s object-oriented graphics engine brings many other benefits too such as simplified programming and reduced workload on the main application MCU. EVE continues to render the current display list until the screen content is to be updated by sending a new list. This allows the MCU to focus on other tasks instead of constantly refreshing the display.

The display list itself (the list of high-level instructions that the MCU sends to EVE) is double buffered using dedicated RAM inside the EVE IC, enabling smooth updates of the user interface content and seamless transitions between pages of the application.

📦 Internal RAM for Assets

EVE chips such as FT81x and BT81x include 1 MB of internal RAM (256 kB in FT80x and BT88x). Because no frame buffer consumes this space, it can be fully dedicated to fonts, logos, and images — the building blocks of modern user interfaces.

Competitors must store these assets in external SDRAM alongside their frame buffers increasing cost and complexity.

🔋 Efficiency in Practice

The benefits of line‑by‑line rendering extend beyond memory savings:

  • Reduced component count and simpler PCB routing — no SDRAM / DDR chips needed.
  • Lower power consumption — fewer memory transactions.
  • Improved reliability — fewer external parts mean fewer points of failure.
  • Faster development cycles — simpler hardware accelerates time‑to‑market.

For industries like automotive, industrial control, and smart appliances, these advantages translate directly into competitive edge.

💾 Flash Management and Compression

Since RAM is volatile, assets must be reloaded after power‑up. EVE supports compressed image formats (for example, ASTC format on BT81x and later), minimising Flash usage and ensuring efficient asset storage. This reduces the need for large, expensive Flash ICs, further cutting costs. Directly attached Flash storage on the BT81x onwards also simplifies the hardware and MCU firmware as the asset data can be transferred directly to EVE instead of via the MCU.

🏁 Conclusion

Bridgetek’s Embedded Video Engine’s line buffer rendering is more than a clever trick — it’s a paradigm shift in embedded graphics. By eliminating SDRAM / DDR requirements and leveraging internal RAM for asset storage, EVE simplifies design, reduces costs, and delivers efficient, high‑quality visuals.
